What Are You Affirming?: A Conversation Between Dr. LaShay Harvey and Heather Polk

We are pleased to present this interview with our Spring 2020 featured artist, Heather Polk. She is conversation with Dr. LaShay Harvey, who hosted her on Instagram Live on September 13th . They discuss the intersections between wellness and art.


Heather Polk is a sales and marketing professional with an active art practice that fills her nights and weekends. She resides in Chicago where she relocated from Atlanta almost 10 years ago. She is working toward establishing a small art studio that will deliver programming for sufferers of chronic disease so that they, and their caretakers, may utilize the empowerment of artistic creativity as a vital part of their disease management. Her art practice is centered around collage and abstract painting.

Dr. LaShay Harvey is a sexologist currently teaching, working and living in Baltimore, MD.  Her research focuses on long-acting, reversible contraception (LARC) use in Black girls. Dr. Harvey is interested in how social and personal narratives impact how Black girls see themselves and the world(s) around them. Dr. Harvey has taught in the college classroom for many years and currently teaches at Towson University. Previously she has taught at The University of Baltimore and Morgan State University. Dr. Harvey considers the classroom to be her studio
